About the Program

The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction – Mathematics Education at The University of Texas at Arlington is a non-thesis degree designed for teachers who wish to specialize in advanced coursework in math education. This degree provides opportunities to develop advanced teaching, research, and leadership skills that align with the latest research and theories in math instruction. Graduates are prepared to analyze their own teaching and make adjustments where needed. They also gain an understanding of the overall state of education and the link between the theory and practice of teaching.

The M.Ed. in C&I – Mathematics Education is a master's degree program only and does not lead to initial teacher certification. The program emphasizes teaching mathematics to K through 12 students, using problem-based, inquiry-based teaching strategies consistent with math disciplines and centered on how people learn. Math content is emphasized in the context of how to teach that content to students.

The program also addresses issues that impact learning, providing tools for educators on topics such as scientific misconceptions/alternative conceptions, logical-mathematical and scientific reasoning, and motivation.

The M.Ed. in Mathematics Education is designed to provide practicing teachers with current findings in research and best instructional practices in mathematics education. The 30-hour degree includes core courses in curriculum design, instructional strategies, and diversity in education. Also included are courses in education research methods and a concentration in mathematics or mathematics education.

This M.Ed. program is designed for teachers in K-12 school settings, as well as for curriculum developers and coordinators, district content specialists, and those in a variety of alternative educational settings such as museums, zoos, nature centers, and corporate education/outreach divisions. In addition their relevance for students in elementary through high school age ranges, the program strategies and content can be applied in early childhood, college, and adult education where math learning is emphasized.

Individuals holding a bachelor's degree at an accredited university in any field of study are eligible to apply.

Please note: the M.Ed. in C&I – Math Education is a master's degree program only and does not lead to initial teacher certification. The program emphasizes teaching math to K through 12 students.

Out of State Residents

Out of state students seeking certification in their home state must review the requirements for licensure with their state education agency to determine if completion of Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction – Mathematics Education and the Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction – Science Education will lead to licensure in their home state.

Prerequisite Courses: Courses EDUC 5305 and EDUC 5394 are prerequisite courses in the program. Students will not be able to register for the final capstone course in the program, EDUC 5397, until all requirements are completed.

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

Students gain understanding of the nature of learning and the purpose of education as the pedagogical foundation to teaching in any discipline. Students develop knowledge of state and national standards and apply these standards vertically and horizontally in preparing high quality teaching and learning experiences. Students gain experience critically analyzing disciplinary content, instructional models, lessons, curricula, and research literature. Students learn to construct and test instructional models using activities that focus attention on diversity, authentic assessments, intellectual, social and emotional development, interdisciplinary connections, and technology. Must be taken prior to EDUC 5309.

Students engage in the advanced study and design of curriculum models with an understanding of cognitive development, pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), and learning progressions. Students learn in-depth analyses of how students learn and how to appropriately differentiate instruction. Students learn culturally responsive teaching practices and gain skill in developing learning experiences that attend to teaching diverse learners. Pre-requisite: EDUC 5305.

In this course students engage in activities and problem solving on concepts related to whole numbers, rational numbers and operations. Students in the course will learn to utilize research-based, problem-based teaching methods to promote children’s understanding. Students will experience how children learn these concepts as they themselves engage in computation and problem solving activities transferrable to classroom practice. In this course, teachers will engage in experiences to learn and teach their students on using numbers, number systems and their structure, operations and algorithms, quantitative reasoning, and technology.

This course engages students in problem-based teaching and curriculum development to help children learn problem solving and critical thinking with an emphasis on patterns, relations, functions, algebraic reasoning, analysis, and technology. The course incorporates research shown effective in helping children develop necessary skills for algebraic reasoning as a foundation for higher level mathematics learning.

In this course students will engage in learning experiences and readily usable curricula for teaching children concepts of probability and statistics, their applications, and technology. Students will examine student learning and research-based practices that best help students understand these mathematical concepts and that will promote their development of probabilistic reasoning abilities.

In this course, students experience and practice innovative curricula for teaching and learning problem solving. Students engage in hands-on activities and apply various problem solving techniques, using mathematical processes to reason mathematically, to solve mathematical problems, to make mathematical connections within and outside of mathematics, and to communicate mathematically. Students learn to identify relevant and irrelevant variables in problems and work through problems to arrive at meaningful solutions. Students examine research on ways to help children become effective problem solvers as transferrable to other mathematics topics and subjects across the curriculum.

In this course students will experience and incorporate active learning curricula that utilize a variety of manipulative materials, diagrams, models, and pictures to study geometry and spatial reasoning. The students will learn effective, research-based practices for teaching geometry to children and examines ways to best help children build geometric and spatial understandings as a foundation for later, more complex abstract visualizations.

This course focuses on inquiry-based, problem-based curricula that help children learn concepts of measurement including units of measure, standardization, and error. Students will learn to use teaching techniques that will promote children’s understandings, as well as the application of measurement concepts to other subjects and to everyday life experiences.

Students gain an understanding of educational research by critically analyzing resources of research. Students also learn sound educational research methods and gain knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis procedures. Using course experiences, students design their own classroom research projects, writing the literature review leading to meaningful research questions and research methodology as the first two chapters of the 4-chapter Capstone project to be completed in EDUC 5397. This course is to be taken after at least 3 hours of graduate course work and preceding EDUC 5397.

Students implement the classroom research designed and written in EDUC 5394, collect and analyze data, and interpret results. Students prepare a final, written research report that presents the investigation and its results in a 4-chapter format, such as would be prepared as a paper for presentation at a professional conference and/or publication in an educational journal. At the conclusion of this course, students submit a copy of their research project report to the course instructor and present the completed project as their final Capstone experience for the master’s degree in education. Prerequisite: EDUC 5394. This course is to be taken in the final semester of the M.Ed. or M.Ed.T.



UTA’s accelerated online education programs combine a unique view of the entire education landscape with practical experience addressing the latest breakthroughs in assessment, instructional strategies, and evidence-based practices for teaching students. Admission to the M.Ed. programs requires the following:

Unconditional Admission

Below are the three requirements a prospective student must meet for Unconditional Admission:

  • Current GRE score of 144 on quantitative section and 153 on verbal section
  • Individuals applying to a Master's degree program must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework and a 3.0 average on all graduate work.
  • 3 letters of reference on file (Download the letter of reference form (.pdf))

Probationary Admission

Applicants who score less than 144 on the quantitative and 153 on the verbal section of the GRE will be considered for probationary admission on the basis of the following:

  • 3.0 GPA during the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework or 3.0 GOA overall for undergraduate OR a 3.0 average on 9 credit hours of graduate work
  • Professionally relevant experience
  • Writing sample evaluated by the COEd Graduate Studies Committee. When available, the GRE writing sample will be required for probationary admission.

Terms of Probation upon Acceptance: All students admitted under probation status will be required to earn a 3.0 GPA during the first 12 hours of graduate coursework in the program, with no grade lower than a "B." Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA for the duration of the program.

Provisional Admission

An applicant unable to supply all required documentation prior to the admissions deadline, but who otherwise appear to meet admission requirements, may be granted provisional admission.

Deferred Admission

An applicant's admission may be deferred when a file is not complete or when denying admission is not appropriate.

Denied Admission

An applicant may be denied admission if the conditions for unconditional and probationary admission have not been met.

In addition, if a student has been suspended or expelled from The University of Texas at Arlington or any other university or program for reasons other than academic reasons, that student may be denied admission or readmission to an educator preparation program in the accelerated online Master of Education programs.

Student Requirements

After being admitted and after completing any probationary period, students must meet the following:

  • Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above in order to continue in this graduate program
  • Complete all pre-graduation requirements before registering in the Capstone course

Additionally, since certification requirements vary among states, students should ensure they are in compliance with these requirements to ensure eligibility for school administrator licensure in their state.

* The online Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction – Mathematics Education DOES NOT fulfill the dual-credit requirements to teach math at a community college.

Students in this program must purchase Tk20 as part of their course materials for a one-time non-refundable cost of $100 plus tax and fees. It may be purchased online.

Graduation Fees

$40 for first diploma, $20 each additional diploma plus applicable mailing fees, and $60 for late application for graduation.

Refund Policy

Students wishing to drop a course and maintain no financial responsibility must do so by 11:59 PM CT before the first class day. The official class day begins at 12:00 AM CT.

The refund policy for sessions greater than five weeks but less than 10 weeks is as follows:

  • Before the first class day: 100 percent.
  • First class day through the third class day: 80 percent.
  • Fourth day through the sixth class day: 50 percent.
  • After the sixth day: No refunds.

The refund policy for sessions 10 weeks or greater is as follows:

  • Before the first class day: 100 percent.
  • First class day through the fifth class day: 80 percent.
  • Sixth day through the tenth class day: 70 percent.
  • Eleventh day through the fifteenth class day: 50 percent.
  • Sixteenth day through the twentieth class day: 25 percent.
  • After the twentieth day: No refunds.
